Welcome to the new and improving JohnOhab.com!

In an effort to simplify my life, I’ve merged my official website, JohnOhab.com: The Greatest and Best Website in the World, with my Blogspot journal, The Greatest and Best Journal in the World, into one all-inclusive website. I’ve hopped on the WordPress bandwagon, eliminated much of the clutter, and will now rely on applications created by actual web developers to improve site functionality and appearance.

All of my content has been migrated, but the presentation and various functions will continue to be added over time. I’ve already added a “Share/Bookmark” button to the bottom of every post and page. If you read something you like, you can easily email to friends, add to your favorite feed reader, or share directly on your social networking service of choice.

In the near future, I will add comment authentication via Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc, which will allow users to post comments using their preferred identity and share across platforms. Think of it as The Greatest and Best Website in the World 2.0.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or if there are features that you would like to see added. The website will continue to evolve over time, and I’m always looking for a few good ideas (especially if the ideas involve incorporating the Arizona Cardinals or me miming public statues).

One of my favorite video games growing up was The Incredible Machine. This 2-D puzzle game required the player to organize a series of common household items into an absurdly complex contraption to perform a simple action (e.g., turn on a light). The playing field included both fixed and movable objects, all of which interacted through simulated physics of gravity, air pressure, heat, and contact. It was incredibly fun, and I was incredibly horrible at it. I have been looking for redemption ever since.

Recently, my colleague Bioephemera introduced me to Crayon Physics, an innovative physics puzzle game that relies on nothing but your imagination, creativity, and ability to wield a miniature crayon. Watch the video above and check out the demo – you can get familiar with the basic maneuvers and even create your own levels. If you’re interested in a real challenge, Crayon Physics Deluxe is now available for a nominal fee.

I can’t promise that you’ll learn much about actual physics, nor can I promise that you will atone for past failings like me. What I can promise you is heaps of fun, over 70 different puzzles, and the opportunity to create and share your own levels over the Internet. I can also promise you a bizarre musical arrangement that mixes Gregorian chanting with that relaxing music you always hear during deep tissue massages. Thankfully, this imaginary world of oddball physics also includes volume control.

Topics: physics, puzzles
Location: at home
Duration: any
Cost: low cost
Gear: computer, internet
Level of Difficulty: easy

Army Command Expands Role in Promoting Stability, Security in Africa
By John Ohab
Special to American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28, 2009 – The U.S. Army Southern European Task Force officially has assumed its new role as the Army component for U.S. Africa Command, an effort to build and strengthen relationships with African army organizations and national and international partners.

Army Maj. Gen. William “Burke” Garrett III, the commander of SETAF, U.S. Army Africa, spoke with online journalists and bloggers yesterday about SETAF’s expanded role in promoting security and stability in Africa.

“Our transformation symbolizes America’s enduring commitment to Africa,” Garrett said during a Defense Department bloggers roundtable. “As U.S. Army Africa, we are America’s premier Army team dedicated to achieving positive change on the continent.”

For more than 50 years, SETAF has deployed throughout Europe, Southwest Asia and Africa, providing command and control for contingency operations, crisis response, disaster relief and humanitarian missions. Since the 1990s, SETAF has worked with African nations to conduct military training and provide humanitarian relief in countries such as Liberia, Rwanda, Uganda, Congo and the former Zaire.

In the coming years, SETAF, operating as U.S. Army Africa, will continue to grow and build capacity to meet the requirements needed to coordinate all U.S. Army activities in Africa.

“Instead of simply responding to crises, we will seek out opportunities to strengthen the capacity of African land forces and their institutions, so they can prevent conflicts and contribute to peace,” Garrett said.

Garrett said he will spend 50 percent of his time stationed in Africa along with about 600 Army personnel engaged across the continent. U.S. Army Africa will use all aspects of the Army, including the Guard and Reserve, which offer important “niche capabilities” such as civil-affairs coordination and well-drilling units.

Because of the enormous cultural diversity across African nations, U.S. Army Africa has teamed with U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command to provide soldiers with the requisite skills and cultural awareness to work effectively with African partners.

Garrett described U.S. Army Africa as a 21st-century organization focused on small units, effective cooperation programs and sustained security engagement.

“[U.S. Army Africa] is not an episodic, flash in the pan, noncombative evacuation operation,” Garrett said. “It’s sustained day-to-day engagement with our African partners. That’s never been done in Africa.”

Currently, U.S. Army Africa leads a number of efforts focused on military education in Rwanda, Liberia, Ethiopia and Ghana. The National Guard heads the State Partnership Program, which links U.S. states with African nations to promote regional stability and civil-military relationships. In the future, U.S. Army Africa seeks to build lasting relationships with nongovernmental organizations and businesses operating in Africa.

U.S. Army Africa’s mission to provide a sustained security engagement marks a departure from the United States’ traditional approach to promoting peace and stability in Africa. Garrett considers this to be “America’s acknowledgement that Africa is rising in strategic importance.”

“We share a bond of humanity with their people,” he said. “And, from our point of view, by investing in that common humanity, we can advance our common security.”

Program Improves Patient Safety through Enhanced Teamwork, Communication
By John Ohab
Special to American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26, 2009 – A Defense Department program is transforming military health care during deployment by enhancing communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals, a master trainer in the program said.

Developed by the Defense Department’s Patient Safety Program, Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety, or TeamSTEPPS, is an evidence-based teamwork system aimed at improving patient safety through a “shared mental model.”

Using the program, health care teams work together to establish situational awareness, solve problems and resolve conflicts.

“The tools and strategies were designed to establish a culture of patient safety and quality health care for the military health system,” Dr. Shad Deering, an Army physician from Tacoma, Wash., deployed to Iraq, said Jan. 22 during a “Dot Mil Docs” audio webcast on BlagTalkRadio.com.

“[TeamSTEPPS] is a very rational approach that doesn’t drag in the person,” he continued. “It drags in the problem and lets you address the real issues. It allows both sides to focus on patient safety rather than emotions.”

Effective medical teams continually have a shared care plan for all patients accomplished through planning, problem solving and process improvement. TeamSTEPPS offers three communication tools: brief, huddle and debrief.

In the briefing session, teams assign roles, delegate responsibility and identify potential outcomes and barriers to success. Throughout patient care, teams huddle in ad hoc meetings meant to re-establish situational awareness, assess the needs of team members and develop a cohesive treatment plan. Huddles often take place at the bedside, where team members can engage patients and include them in the plan. A final debriefing gives team members an opportunity to communicate their experiences and identify areas that can be improved in the future.

“You are trying to provide a safety net for your team by maintaining situational awareness,” Deering said. “You’re not calling anybody’s performance into question. It’s really about watching out for each other and making sure you’re doing the right thing for the patient.”

Army Maj. Amber Pocrnich, a labor and delivery nurse from Fort Riley, Kan., now deployed to Iraq, said TeamSTEPPS provides new avenues to communicate more effectively and enhances her ability to work in teams.

“It’s a tool bag to help with communication and to work more effectively. Everybody comes with a different level of experience, communication style or personality. It’s a way to help build a team,” Pocrnich said.

During their work at the 86th Combat Army Support Hospital in Iraq, Deering and Pocrnich had the opportunity to observe the positive impact of the TeamSTEPPS in action.

“We saw a significant decrease in the number of errors due to communication issues and the number of medication errors that happened,” Deering said.

TeamSTEPPS can be adapted to meet the challenges of a combat support hospital, including multiple casualties, unique patterns of injury, language and cultural differences and long-distance travel through the combat environment. Because health care teams often are assembled after deployment, it is critical that newly formed teams quickly develop their technical and communication skills through simulation exercises, refresher training and practice in theater.

“Medical care in the deployed environment is challenging. We all come from different areas to this one unit, and usually teams haven’t worked together for very long when they get into theater,” Pocrnich said.

More than 100 specialty units and clinics have received some level of TeamSTEPPS training and are in various stages of implementation in military treatment facilities. Also, more than 1,200 trainers and coaches have been trained in teamwork principles.

Deering and Pocrnich expressed optimism that TeamSTEPPS ultimately will be integrated into all military medical systems before deployment to minimize subsequent errors and foster a safer and more effective medical environment.

“Health care is our practice, but our mission is patient safety,” Pocrnich said.

(John Ohab holds a doctorate in neuroscience and works for the New Media directorate of the Defense Media Activity.)

The Wonder Sub, The Beast, The Closer, and The Eye go the distance

After shooting to an early 6-0 lead with three 1-point frames and a stunning 3-point frame, The Greatest and Best Team in the World faltered and gave up a crushing four point frame. The game remained close, but the opposing Teal team kept their momentum to regain a 12-9 advantage. However, with refills of our patented all-natural, delicious energy beverage–because we can clearly never have enough–The Greatest and Best Team in the World was able to tie the game at a decisive 15-15 score. With the game on the line, and the little white ball in a tough, short location which had given the team trouble all night, our Wonder Sub, seen in the attached picture, took our first ball of the frame and lobbed a beautiful shot to within a foot of the little white ball, turned to Jenni and whispered, “That’s Hot!”. The opposition didn’t have a chance with their remaining three balls, and with that, the game was won.

In fact, there is a world of excitement and intrigue in the state of Delaware, and it all revolves around their terrific Class A Advanced Affiliate baseball team, the Wilmington Blue Rocks. In July, Agent G-C and I had the opportunity to take part in the local Friday night tradition at Frawley Stadium, where the mighty Blue Rocks took on the their *long-time foe, the Kingston Indians (* indicates blatant fabrication for dramatic effect).

The Blue Rocks game was unlike anything we had ever experienced. To our surprise, the Blue rocks were REALLY popular; so popular, in fact, that they had not one but three mascots: a moose named Big Blue, a giant dancing celery named Mr. Celery, and a strange spherical blue creature named The Rubster. G-E and I spent the entire game trying to figure out how any of these mascots could possibly relate to the Blue Rocks, but now that I know their names, I’m not sure I’m comfortable knowing the association.

From the first inning, it became immediately clear why Wilmington residents packed into the stadium on Friday nights, and it had nothing to do with baseball. The real attraction came between innings when the crowd was inundated with a seemingly endless array of contests, performances, and trivia, which included three human/dog tandem frisbee routines, a hamburger eating contest, a hamburger-making relay contest, and various mascot dance sessions that accompanied a range of music spanning the spectrum of appropriateness.

Though the crowd maintained a high level of enthusiasm throughout the game, their fanaticism was truly unleashed once the game was over; that is, when the hamburger eating contest began. Yes, a hamburger eating contest. We didn’t know the exact attendance, but G-E and I were pretty sure the crowd actually grew once the game ended. People had clearly been waiting for this event. Unbelievable. For 10 minutes, we watched eight competitors stuff their faces with hamburgers in hopes of winning the $1000 prize. Below, you can see Big Blue cheering on the competitors, as well as a groundskeeper watching intently in the background. Not pictured: G-C and I standing in a state of awe, mouths open, having more fun than anyone. Now that’s Blue Rocks baseball!

On my last day at NIMH, I finally realized why people are continually lured to the remote satellite location of Executive Plaza: Chipotle. We are all drawn to things we love, and there is no better way to assure a daily trip to our most beloved Mexican food establishment than to work in an area in which Chipotle easily tops your dining choices. Here is the thought process Dr. Palmer and I worked through approximately once a week (note: italics indicate deep thinking):

Quiznos vs. Chipotle? Chipotle. Starbucks vs. Chipotle? Chipotle. La Madeleine’s vs Chipotle? Chipotle. 30 minute walk to Chilli’s vs. Chipotle? Chili’s. Inordinate volumes of sweat ruining our work clothes as a result of the 30 minute walk to Chili’s in the DC humidity vs. Chipotle? Chipotle it is!

There are many advantages to eating Chipotle as frequently as possible. For instance, you have the opportunity to wait in lines that extend from the counter to the back of the room and then wrap upon themselves back to the counter. This ensures adequate time for you to complain about the line while secretly loving the fact that you won’t make it back to the office within an hour. How many times have I used that excuse? Sorry, boss, you know those Chipotle lines! Hint: go to Chipotle with someone you like. You will inevitably be in line so long that you may run out of interesting conversation material by the time you sit down. Save the “which vegetable in your burrito is not currently approved by the FDA” discussion for when you’re seated, and use the time in line to decide which free fixins’ you will pile on your meat choice.

There is also a clear company emphasis on providing customers with a healthy and balanced eating experience. While the employees appear to have undergone some kind of fear-conditioned shock training to provide exactly one scoop of meat per customer, no more and no less, they are more than happy to shovel inordinate amounts of salsas onto your burrito. And, hey, since it’s salsa, and salsa is probably made of vegetables, that means your burrito becomes exponentially more healthy with each variety of salsa you add. For your fountain soda, Chipotle even provides two enormous tubs of lemons and limes, which offer a delicious flavor as well as an immediate Vitamin C immune boost to combat the helping of E. Coli in the fecal remnants you’re about to ingest.

The best part about going to Chipotle with Dr. Palmer is that she has no problem picking up the tab when I “forget my wallet”. Because the Chipotle burrito weighs approximately 6 pounds, making it pound-for-pound the least expensive food product available, I can easily rationalize to her that “I’ll get the next one”. Of course, we both know quite well that I won’t actually get the next one, but before she can raise this point, the cashiere has already ripped her credit card from her hand and moved on to the next customer.

I will miss our weekly trips to Chipotle with Dr. Palmer, but I am comforted by the memories we share, both in our minds eye and in the undigested pieces of aluminum foil that are embedded in our bowels forever.

I have a hard time watching Team USA Basketball. Unfortunately, because I am obsessed with the Olympics this year, I am forced to watch every single one of their games from start to finish. I understand the excitement, but I’m not convinced they are quite the powerhouse people make them out to be. Here is why:

They don’t play any defense. Yes, they have a ton of steals and points off turnovers, but this is a result of them being ten times faster and more athletic than everyone else in the world, not being more skilled at defense. Being more athletic is not being good at defense. Rebounding is part of defense, and they can’t rebound. Guarding the pick and roll is part of defense, and they can’t guard the pick and roll. Effective double teams are part of defense, and they can’t double team. Occasionally, LeBron James will jump from half court to block an opponent’s layup–the crowd loves it, and the highlight is shown on every TV station in the world–but, if you watch the games, you know that Team USA doesn’t excel because of their team defense.

They have no team chemistry. In basketball, the notion of role-playing is the difference between a team with a lot of good players (Phoenix Suns) and a good team (San Antonio Spurs). Players need to know their role to highlight their individual strengths and minimize their weaknesses. On Team USA, most of the players roam the court with no particular position waiting for their chance to shoot. LeBron James is somehow the point guard, while Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, and Daron Williams, the point guards, often stand around doing nothing. Carlos Boozer, one of the best low-post players in the league, looks particularly lost and confused. One possible approach would be to assemble a collection of players that makes the best team, rather than simply picking the All-Stars of the All-Star Game like we do now, or perhaps just send the NBA’s best team as the USA representative. I have no doubt the Celtics, the Lakers, or the Spurs would perform as well as Team USA. Of course, this would be difficult because of the number of international players in the NBA, but it’s an interesting idea.

They can’t shoot. They are the worst three-point shooting team in the playoffs. Iran hasn’t won a single game, but they shoot a higher three-point percentage than Team USA. This fact is even more embarrasing when you consider the three-point line is Our team also shoots 60% from the free-throw line. It’s free! A FREE throw. Anything less than 80% is unacceptable. Why didn’t Jerry Colangelo add a decent shooter to the roster? Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwayne Wade are not shooters. They are scoreres. Michael Redd is the best shooter, but he rarely plays. Layups and dunks aren’t shots, but I suppose you have to get points somehow.

Jason Kidd. This guy is just plain bad. He absolutely cannot and never has been able to shoot a basketball. I meant this more figuratively, but it turns out, he nearly literally can’t shoot. As of the 3rd quarter of Team USA’s 4th game, Jason Kidd just took his FIRST shot of the Olympics. International players know that he can’t shoot, and the result is that Jason Kidd’s defender backs off and focuses his attention on someone else. Of course, this is never discussed because most players
on Team USA can score at will.

Coaches. Why is Mike Krzyzewski, a career college coach, a head coach for a team of NBA players? Why is Mike D’Antoni, a coach whose entire basketball strategy revolves around offense, the assistant coach on a team that has no problem scoring but can’t play any defense (see #1)? To me, the team does not have the polished look of a well-coached team. I think anyone who knows anything about basketball knows that Greg Popovich should have been the coach of Team USA.

Doug Collins. He’s not playing, which makes it hard to criticize Team USA for his horrible announcing, but guilt-by-association is a powerful phenomenon. The more I listen to Doug Collins announce Team USA basketball games, the more I dislike Team USA, the more I dislike the sport of basketball, and the more I dislike the act of listening.

Team USA continues to win every game in the Olympics. They aren’t exactly annihilating their opponents, but I suppose winning is all that matters to The Redeem Team and how they accomplish that goal is of no consequence. Still, thirty point wins marred by poor shooting, bad defense, and sloppy play don’t make Team USA look good; it just proves that everyone else is pretty bad.

I hope Team USA wins the gold medal. They are the strongest, most talented, skilled, athletic, and well-trained collection of players in the world. They are ten times better than everyone else, despite all of their shortcomings. And, hey, they aren’t posing for racially-charged team photos, so at least they are representing our country with pride and respect. You (I) can’t criticize them for that.

Looking to rebound from a demoralizing Week 3 loss, The Greatest and Best Team in the World drew from the Olympics for inspiration in Week 4.

In a page from the US mens gymnastics narrative (minus the stunted musculoskeletal development, delayed vocal maturation, and their unexplainable inability to give a proper two-handed high-five), we returned to the familiar role of underdog. We knew that to prove our doubters wrong, we would need to embrace the strong foundation of friendship, trust, and unity that brought us to the DC Bocce League in the first place. Like the Olympic competitors from Georgia and Russia, we, too, reached across the competitive divide to embrace those with whom we may not agree (above picture). In addition, we integrated into our bocce throws an array of exaggerated facial expressions that women weightlifters use to convey a marked sense of assurance and self-control. Next week, we anticipate the addition of several adroit lunging maneuvers the likes which have never been seen outside of Olympic-level fencing competition.

And, most importantly, we incorporated Michael Phelps’ infamous pre-swim tradition of flailing his flaccid arms about as if they are completely independent from the rest of his body.

In the end, none of these strategies made a damn difference, and we lost another close match to Irritable Bocce Syndrome (IBS). It turns out you can have all the heart and dedication in the world, but if you can’t score more points than the other team, you aren’t going to win. Unless you cheat. And, that’s exactly what we’re going to do next week. Lesson learned.

It is official: Morgan Freeman now narrates all commercials.

The American public is more likely to purchase a product when its commercials feature children who talk and act like adults.

The tentativeness and lack of follow-through indicate that the two-handed high-five is a relatively new celebratory maneuver for non-American athletes.

The two-handed high-five should never culminate with the grasping of hands.

If all members of the Chinese womens gymnastics team are 16 years of age or older, then I am muscular, enjoy talking about cars, and look forward to my monthly colon cleansing.

For not having been stabbed in the abdomen with a saber, women fencers certainly scream like it after every point.

Shouldn’t’ be funny, but it is.

The only thing more ridiculous than China substituting a “more attractive” little girl to lip-sync at the Olympic Opening Ceremony is the NBC Broadcasting team condemning the Chinese for it, as if the United States suddenly was not the most superficial, judgmental, and aesthetics-based society on the face of the planet.

It was the least productive I could have possibly been. I loved every minute. Periodically throughout the program, the broadcast team would check in with President Bush to see how he was enjoying his time in Beijing. First, he was at the opening ceremony, then a swimming event, then a basketball game, then joking around with Bob Costas, and then another swimming event. Later, I learned that President Bush was saddened when he realized that he would be leaving Beijing before the baseball events. So, today, Team USA and China played an exhibition game for the President. He got to see his baseball, too.

At some point, probably around the 10th President Bush update, I started to wonder exactly how he was balancing his work schedule with all of these sporting events. There certainly is a lot to see at the Olympics! It sure was an interesting dichotomy: me, laying in bed, eating Wheat Thins just 15 minutes from the White House, and watching the Olympic broadcast from Beijing, where the President of the United States is also lounging around watching sports.

Anyway, President Bush made it on YouTube this weekend. I guess that’s where our paths fork in the road…

Even when I’m in the worst of moods, a jogger running in place at a stoplight still makes me laugh out loud.

Of all the movies about white people who pretend to be Native Americans, The Last of the Mohicans is my favorite.

I return more than half of the clothes I buy, and on each return trip, I spend more than the amount I am refunded.

If I had Tivo, I would record an episode of Man vs. Wild just so I could listen to Bear Grylls pronounce the word “water” as “woo-tah” over and over.

I get a surprisingly large amount of personal satisfaction from knowing lyrics to Kelly Clarkson songs.

I won’t reveal anything about the two individuals, except to say they were most definitely Devon O. and Jen C.

Alright. It’s time. Watch the video. Feel free to compare and contrast your experience to mine, which can essentially be boiled down to a 2 minutes and 28 second mixture of laughter, disbelief, and discomfort.

First things first. Did this actually happen? The whole thing looks staged to me. Apparently, other people think it’s real. If it is real, the story represents the extremest of exceptions that in no way generalizes to reality. The reason we haven’t been inundated with lion-man reunion stories is because they never happen. If this were attempted on a regular basis, we would have to replace all the missing white woman stories on FoxNews with stories about lion maulings.

The story would have been just as heartwarming and tearjerking in the 1970s. Why did it take so long for the story to become popular? I refuse to accept that the YouTube viewers of the new millennium are simply more sentimental about man-beast-man friendships than were people in the 1970s.

They sure have a lot of footage of the lion during its youth, including an aerial shot of John, Ace, and Christian playing outside the church. How did they have the foresight, let alone the financial resources, to commission a camera man and a helicopter to film the “flashback” sequence of the video years before knowing the conclusion of the story?

Who is the half-naked, leathery guy that runs down the hill toward the end of the video? Lindsay and I concluded that his story is probably far more interesting than John, Ace, or Chrstian’s. Still, half-naked leathery guy wasn’t the lion’s friend. He should have been eaten. The cameraman would have also been eaten.

There has never been a more accurate film portrayal of the myth that pets resemble their owners. I momentarily considered that Christian thought John and Ace were lions, too, but that would have made things way too easy.

The lion should have eaten John and Ace just for wearing those clothes.

I find it strange that they chose the Whitney Houston version of “I Will Always Love You” and not the original Dolly Parton version, which was recorded about the same time the story took place.

As Lindsay pointed out, the most dramatic points of the song positively correlate with expressiveness of the men and the lion. The more intense the song gets, the more hugs are given by the lion. That is weird.

The whole phenomenon just reinforces one of our country’s most glaring problems: our inability to relate to other cultures unless it is within the context of how we are contributing our insights, values, and beliefs to make those cultures “better”. The relationship between African people and animals is one that has developed over thousands of years. There are likely hundreds of similar stories, myths, and legends in African culture, yet we only recognize this principle as worthy of our attention if presented by people that look similar to us. The notion that two white dudes who adopted a lion are somehow the people responsible for bringing the concepts of friendship and loyalty to Africa is as ridiculous as their outfits or the music.

I’ve read the DC Bocce League mission statement. It speaks of sharing new experiences, the spirit of friendship, and honoring athletic tradition. However, it says nothing about getting your ass handed to you and having to enjoy it.

In Week 3, The Greatest and Best Team in the World got their assess handed to them by The Yaks, 16-6, in what should have been a demoralizing ass-handing of epic proportions. Yet, anyone who has played The Yaks knows they are the nicest, most complimentary people in the league, which made it impossible for us to feel emotions commonly associated with losing. In fact, I have never felt so good about myself after contributing zero points en route to a blow-out loss. As a team, we were so incredibly high on life after our ass-handing that it took several attempts for Gautam to capture an obligatory agonizing defeat pose (above) that didn’t feature smiles and exemplary posture.

On top of providing for us a supportive environment ideal for losing, the Yaks also finished us off in less than 30 minutes. By 7pm, the only bocce action worth documenting took place in other bocce games, which were approaching their competitive peak while our field lay in complete emptiness. Well, onward and upward, I always say!

People who think winning isn’t everything have probably never won anything. The Greatest and Best Team in the World knows only winning. That’s why we employ a number of strategic strategies on and off the field to ensure victory. During bocce matches, for instance, we stay alert and energized by drinking nutrient-filled protein shakes like in the blue cups above. Clinical trials have demonstrated that this tasty, all-natural beverage improves hand-eye coordination, reaction times, decision-making, and visual acuity.

In our Week 2 match against the 419 Allstars, we utilized our heightened vision and improved judgment to identify close calls that would normally go unnoticed by the standard eye. By requesting official timeouts for measurement in virtually every frame (see pictures), we earned several extra points while disrupting our opponent’s momentum. This proved a most effective strategy, as both teams battled to a 14-14 tie in the waining lights of dusk. Of course, this also resulted in the largest number of single game measurements in the history of the DC Bocce League; a feat so remarkable that we failed to consider how sharing our special beverage with the 419 Allstars might negate the advantage it provided for us.

In the end, the 419 Allstars’ thirst for victory was just strong enough to propel them to a 16-14 win. They may have won the bocce game, but we’ll see who is celebrating when the horse laxatives we added to their beverages begin to work their magic.

—————————————————————————————
Week 1, July 22: The Greatest and Best Team in the World 16, Sweet Italian Balls 7
Week 2, July 29: 419 Allstars 16, The Greatest and Best Team in the World 14

Everyone on the planet loved The Dark Knight except me. I thought the movie was a mess from start to finish, and it only salvaged any semblance of respectability because of Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart. Here is why I didn’t like the movie:

I did not like the plot. I thought it was unoriginal and boring, and it took far too long to develop ideas that were really quite elementary. Once it “developed”, the plot relied on arbitrary and irrelevant plot turns with no immediate goal and certainly no ultimate payoff. At the very least, M. Night Shamalyan movies use plot twists to provide insight, however absurd it might be, into the previous events of the movie. The Dark Knight used multiple, sudden narrative shifts to do nothing but work toward Ben Hur run-time territory. I felt like they wrote the script as they were filming, as if they took advice from the producers of the show, 24. I was so bored that I fell asleep twice, each time waking up with hopes that it was finally over. I was disappointed both times.

The disparity between Christian Bale’s voice as Bruce Wayne and Batman drew far too much negative attention.

The lead female character, played by Maggie Gyllenhaul, was relegated to a helpless, inept role that I would expect from woman characters of the 1940s.

I did not like the action scenes. There was not a single action scene in the entire movie that was memorable, creative, or unique. In a year, nobody will say, “Hey remember that scene in Badman II when (insert creative action scene)? “. We sure got to see Batman punching and elbowing people in the dark, though. Whew! What a rush! And, of course, there was the kidnapping scene in China which was lifted straight from Mission Impossible: II. Also, consider that half the movie consisted of Christian Bale driving a really fast car through the city. Wow. Fast cars! Are we still doing that? If I wanted to see fast cars, I would watch Bullit, The Fast and the Furious, Gone in Sixty Seconds, or the Herby series.

It ripped off the Saw movies. The morality scene involving the bombs and boats is a clear case of intellectual plagiarism. The Saw series may be ridiculous, but at least they are trying to be original.

I can’t think of a recent movie that has required more suspension of disbelief than The Dark Knight. On one hand, we are made to believe it takes place in a comic book/Matrix world where anything can happen, and yet, we are supposed to believe this within the context of a gritty crime drama. The bullet reconstruction scene? The sonar-vision scene? Badman’s underground layer with an endless ceiling of lights? How many barrels of gasoline could one bad guy get his hands on? Do cops really fake their own deaths at the cost of their family’s mental health? I felt so insulted. It has never been more clear that movie producers think American audiences are absolute morons. (we are)

I was annoyed by the camera work during multiple character dialogues. Is it really necessary for the camera to make several complete spirals during each conversation?

The last words of the film are “Dark Knight”. Come on.

Thoughts?

Every detractor seems to think they are the first person to ever point out that “the greatest and best in the world” is not the most impressive distinction imaginable. These people are 100% correct, since, “the greatest and best in the universe”, for example, would most certainly trump any worldly greatness. With that, I have nothing to say but touché and congratulations on making an observation of reality that places your level of intelligence somewhere between a first and second grader.

The reason I chose “the greatest and best in the world” is because of my favorite Tenacious D song, Tribute, which speaks of The Greatest and Best Song in the World. The difference between my references and those of Tenacious D is that they are singing a song that is a tribute to The Greatest and Best Song in the World. In fact, in their song, they actually say quite unequivocally that “this is not The Greatest Song in the World, no. This is just a tribute” and that “the song we sang on that fateful night didn’t actually sound anything like this song. This is just a tribute!”. Compare this to my website, journal, and bocce ball team, which actually ARE the greatest and best of their kind in the world. For those of you looking for a meta approach to this phenomenon, you can consider my references to “the greatest and best in the world” as sort of a tribute to their tribute to The Greatest and Best Song in the World.

This should all make sense now. For some reason, Tenacious D won’t allow video embedding, so to watch the video, you’ll need to do things the old fashioned way and follow this link to their YouTube Page.

Los Angeles: Land of the Sweatshirt, Shorts and Sandals Combination

One of the best parts about living in the City of Angels is that wardrobe choices do not require any creativity, effort or an awareness of fashion trends. Because the weather rarely varies beyond the typical 70-80 degrees and scattered clouds forecast, pretty much any combination of clothing and accessories is acceptable year-round. If one chooses to wear flip flops during the winter or sweatshirts in the summer, there is rarely any consequence (unless you consider the increased likelihood of seeing people in socks and sandals to be a consequence, which I most certainly do).

On occasion, temperatures descend into the 50s, which induces widespread purchasing of scarves and heavy coats that are likely worn once or twice before the weather returns to normal and the items are permanently discarded. Several times a year, they experience “rain”, which results in a significant increase in umbrella purchases and inversely significant decrease in driving quality. During the month of June, Los Angeles often experiences a marked increase in overcast days, which has been summarily described by the term “June Gloom”. Of course, this only reinforces their obliviousness to weather since even this creative attempt to correspond terminal sounds of word units is unsuccessful: June doesn’t rhyme with Gloom.

To residents of Los Angeles, weather variance is seen as a personal insult: an inconvenience mandated by the heavens to interrupt their never ending supply of clear, sunny days. The irony of smog having eliminated the possibility of a true sunny day ever happening is perhaps too delicious not to mention.

Fact: The only thing better than eating salmon for breakfast is eating salmon-colored, Sweet Italian Balls for dinner.

In Week 1 of the Summer DC Bocce League, The Greatest and the Best Team in the World feasted on their salmon-colored opponent in a 16-7 shlacking for the ages. Ripe with clutch bocce maneuvers and a good o’ fashioned 4-Bomb, this victory was a critical first step toward our goal of an undefeated season; indeed, few teams in bocce history have ever lost the opening match and still managed to go undefeated.

Now, we are more confident than ever, having matched our longest winning streak of the season and added another player nickname in the process. Pending security clearance, urine test, and full physical, the addition of The Closer brings us one step closer to completing our Nickname Circle of Friendship. And, in the end, friendship is the reason we play the game. Well, friendship and winning. But really just winning.

—————————————————————————————
Week 1, July 22: The Greatest and Best Team in the World 16, Sweet Italian Balls 7

Regular Season Record: 1-0
—————————————————————————————

The 2007-2008 AAAS S&T Policy Fellowship experience is almost complete, and so we return to the beginning to reflect on a year full of acronyms, networking happy hours, and, of course, many efforts to bridge the gap between science and public policy. Most importantly, there was a spectacular group of fellow Fellows, now friends, with whom to share the past year.

For those of you with a pair of binoculars and an insatiable hunger for unnecessary details, focus your attention to the upper left corner of the group picture, and you will find me sporting a handsome smile and an even handsomer Arizona Cardinals lanyard (below image). There are up to four interesting items worth noting:

At the time of the group photo, we hadn’t received our ID badges, thus rendering the lanyard completely useless other than as an ill-advised fashion accessory.

My healthy smile in the group photo was quite contrary to my physical discomfort as I produced an unprecedented volume of sweat during the 45-minute photo session on perhaps the most humid day in DC history, if not all of history.

At the Cardinals game where these lanyards were dispersed (below), you’ll find that I am displaying a facial expression that, indeed, represents my discomfort on that humid August day in Phoenix, in which the temperatures hovered around 115 degrees. Marty, on the other hand, seems strangely pleased, while Brian/Josh is either nosy, scared, or both, having never before experienced an Arizona summer.

Marty is wearing two lanyards.

New Rule: People who use Facebook are better than people who use MySpace. People who use both Facebook and MySpace are not as good as people who use only Facebook, but they are better than people who use only MySpace. Beyond this, people are reduced progressively as they subscribe to additional social networking websites.

Note how even people who use only Facebook, myself included, achieve some level of dumbness by nature of joining. I am frequently reminded that Facebook is not exempt from this inherited burden when people carelessly leave a status message without any regard for standard grammar principles. Consider:

Allister is I’m going to the store.

No. See, that doesn’t make any sense. I will now finish by providing some simple alternatives that you can consider when you adapt this sentence to your Facebook away message:

Allister is going to the store.
Allister is at the store.
Allister likes the store.
Allister is hiding in the store.
Allister stole a pack of Nibs from the store.
Allister will be getting Chipotle with Jessica after he goes to the store.
Allister has been paying for a membership at Bally Total Fitness for a year, but he has never once been inside the facility.
Allister doesn’t understand why everyone likes The Godfather: Part II but only rappers like Scarface.

They love celebrity gossip, emaciated little dogs in human clothes, red carpets, and independent films. They read TMZ before they think about picking up the LA Times. No matter where you move from, you too will adopt these behaviors. Once, Ashwini chased Chris Webber and Tyra Banks through Ralphs grocery store with a disposable camera that she purchased minutes earlier when she saw them shopping for Bacos. Once, I was informed that I had just unknowingly walked by Freddie Prince Jr., and this upset me for days longer than it should have. The stereotypes about Hollywood are all true.

While celebrity sightings are great, the real fun of Los Angeles is the diversity of moviegoing opportunities. Of course, you must first come to terms with the obscenely high ticket prices, lines that stretch several blocks, and the reality that you will never find convenient parking. For instance, it was not out of the ordinary to pay $15 for a ticket; lines like this (here and here) were regular occurrences in Westwood; and I have missed several movies because parking was not achieved until well after showtime. Get passed all of that, and you can really start to appreciate the Los Angeles moviegoing experience.

There are theaters galore, movie premieres and their after-parties, and enough advanced screenings to fill every night of the week. Advanced screenings in Los Angeles are analogous to happy hours in DC, except much less drinking and far fewer suits, and making jokes about working in Congress will get zero laughs because people don’t know what Congress is rather than because the jokes simply aren’t funny. Stay in Los Angeles long enough, and you can be a part of some amazing movie experiences.

Naturally, my two most memorable movie experiences in Los Angeles involved seeing the Matrix Reloaded, once at Grauman’s Chinese Theater with all of Team Neuroscience and once at the Howard Hughes IMAX with Oldhab. Other memorable movie experiences include but are not limited to:

Bulletproof Monk with Seth and B/J

Equilibrium with B/J

Anchorman with Seth and B/J

Feel free to post comments describing some of your favorite movie experiences in Los Angeles.

(Note: the combining of our powers has, on occasion, given rise to a flying environmental advocate with blue skin, a green mullet, a wry sense of humor, and the ability to summon any super-power necessitated by his current predicament. We reserve the right to open a roster spot for such an individual.)

It is going to happen. There is nothing you can do about it.

On Tuesday, July 22nd, the games begin…

This cannot be disputed. Each sequence offers its own unique treasures, the most memorable of which is Rocky’s leap over a park bench outside Independence Hall in Rocky II. During our trip to Philadelphia, Marty and I honored the city’s great contribution to American history by visiting several famous Rocky landmarks.

Below, you’ll find a video of the original Rocky leap and a series high-speed motion capture images that display my actual re-enactment of this special movie moment.
