My challenge for the year is to find a word in the English language that describes this commercial better than the word “awkward.”

I somehow came across all of these yesterday. It’s safe to say I watched the Dale Peterson ad 50 times, and it kept getting better with every viewing.  What is your favorite campaign ad ever?

It’s been a long time since we’ve last had a Bun of the Day. Just another reason to love Walgreens (besides Walt-Tussin).

This has to be the funniest commercial I have ever seen, except for every other Old Spice commercial.

Legitimate question: which of these two commercials makes you feel more uncomfortable?

This Viagra commercial — perhaps the worst commercial in the history of the world besides the dancing Prilosec OTC lady commercial — warns that Viagra may result in chest pain, nausea, or other discomforts during sex, erections lasting more than 4 hours, a sudden decrease or loss of vision or hearing, an unsafe drop in blood pressure, headaches, facial flushing, upset stomach, bluish vision, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light.

Comprehensive. And, yet, all of these side effects really seem secondary to the fact that this man is engaged in a dialogue about erectile dysfunction with an interactive reflection of himself.

This Pepsi commercial starring Jimmy Fallon and Parker Posey is perhaps my favorite commercial of all time for reasons that include but are not limited to:

1. The background music, “Steamline” by Newton, comes with a mandatory 10-day period in which one cannot stop whistling the tune.

2. Jimmy Fallon’s dance moves look exactly how my dance moves would look if I were dancing through a crowded city street. Ironically, I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to emulate his elbow maneuver at the :59 mark and have yet to figure it out. I’m pretty sure it’s impossible. Seriously, try it. Impossible.

It took 38 years for Starbucks to unleash their full-bodied, flavorful instant coffee known as “Via.” It took only one well-documented loss in OscarFest 2003 to steal my likeness for their VIA marketing bulletin.

Last week, I had the opportunity to meet and attend a talk given by David Meerman Scott, marketing guru and author of “The New Rules of Marketing and PR”. I had actually just read his book several months ago, so the core principles of the discussion were familiar. However, many of the examples he used to demonstrate creative and effective communications strategies were completely new to me.

One these examples was the “Will It Blend?” campaign by the blender manufacturer, BlendTec. In this series of videos, the company’s CEO, Tom Dickson, dons a white labcoat and puts his standard blender to the test with a variety of random objects, including an iPhone (above video). It’s a simple, essentially free marketing campaign that has apparently sent sales through the roof.

I need to do something like this for my ScienceCheerleader special reports — any ideas?

I’ll leave it up to you to decide which is most ridiculous: the jeans with no belt, the cell phone and pager on the swimming suit while BBQing, or every other aspect of these damn Cenegenics advertisements.

And, now I will proceed to watch the video probably 10 more times.

Southwest Airlines has a rich history of hilarious commercials, but this new one is really something special. I can’t stop laughing. It’s funny because it’s so close to reality. How many times has this happened to you?! My favorite part is how the girl is actually sort of impressed before he destroys the audio equipment. Even the DJ is pretty into it.

With the bocce season on hiatus, each member of The Greatest and Best Team in the World is free to pursue their own personal endeavors (that is, in addition to our rigorous off-season nutrition, acupuncture, and exercise regiment). For example, Jennufine and the Captain pass their time as Citizen Foresters with Casey trees; the one individual whose nickname did not pass our nickname-vetting process worked for the Obama campaign; and the others prefer a quieter, low-profile experience.

The same cannot be said for The Beast, who throughout the year will be appearing on A&E’s The Beast, a gritty crime drama about a veteran FBI agent assigned to a new partner, unaware that he was recruited as a double agent to investigate his activities. Thrilling! Don’t worry–all of the episodes are scheduled to film prior to the Bocce season to ensure The Beast will not miss a single throw.

Please tune into A&E to support one of your own, The Beast, if not to preserve the sanctity of DC Bocce, then certainly because The Greatest and Best Team in the World (representing The Beast) has signed an incentive-laden, back-end contract deal based on the show’s performance.

There are many awkward scenes in this episode including but not limited to: every scene involving Mario Lopez and this strange slow-motion version of Nurse Jennifer undoing her hair for Zack.

Let’s forget that Jim Craig’s signature looks exactly like “Jen Coffey” and focus on the discrepancy between the signature’s location on the picture compared to the thought bubble. How hard would it have been to just use the same one?

Whatever confidence these kids gained through swimming, they will likely lose ten-fold when their peers repeatedly mock and laugh at them for wearing such ridiculous outfits and making such ridiculous hand gestures.

What’s really going to bake your noodle is whether I traveled to downtown Chicago for the sole reason of mimicking the spread eagle Endnote guy or if Thomas Corporation broke into my personal picture archive to find inspiration for their new advertising campaign.

Ten points to anyone who can identify something in this advertisement that even approaches realistic. Until then, please explain:

1. why this man is wearing a button-down collared shirt and khaki’s while performing chemistry experiments. The fact that he is wearing a lab coat is nearly inexcusable but at least plausible–during five years as a graduate student, I wore a lab coat approximately two times, one of which was done purely for the sake of taking an exaggerated laboratory picture.

2. why he is performing experiments in a room that looks oddly familiar to the construct program in The Matrix. The only explanation here is that we are observing his residual self-image: a mental projection of his digital self.

3. why there are 4 bottles full of colored solutions, two of which are dangling in mid-air. There are no Bunsen burners, no heat or stir plates, no vacuum pumps, or anything else that would necessitate their being suspended above the table.

4. why he has safety goggles if he isn’t going to wear them. This makes even less sense when you consider that the opening of the flask containing the random blue solution is actually pointed directly toward his face.

5. why he has 10 test tubes but no reagents and no means of transferring reagents (if he did have them) into the test tubes.

6. how the Merck index will help in this situation.
