Frustration: A Tale of Two Ohabs

As I was sorting through photos the other day, not only did I come across the Excaliburization of John (see previous entry), but I found another random picture from my sister Devon’s high school graduation. At first glance, there isn’t anything noteworthy going on. Richard pre-military exercise routine looks to pleased with something, MG is talkative as ever, and you can make out some of the famed Corona del Sol track in the background. It appears that whoever took this picture wasn’t quite clear why they were taking it. I guess it just seemed like the thing to do.

However, a closer examination reveals a pretty funny parallel between Marty and I–both of us fiddling with our digital cameras and both displaying faces of extreme frustration. For one reason or another, I will always associate this particular facial expression with my dad…that, and of course the face he makes whenever he sees someone from a distance and screams “Hey!” with his hands in the air. He also makes this face when you walk into the backyard while he is scaling a palm tree in shorts and sneakers. It’s interesting that as he cuts the palm trees, he is also lacerating himself all over his chest and hands, yet he still appears to be in total bliss. It isn’t until a few hours later when he realizes the physical trauma he has experienced and then once again reverts back to the frustrated face. Of course, this frustration is easily diffused if one simply puts on a Sun Devil’s baseball game and gives him any number of MG’s pillows to fold intricately beneath his head and the base of the couch.
